Description
2-Day Teapot Making Masterclass with Hamish Jackson (31st January – 1st February)
Saturday, 31st January – Sunday, 1st February
9:30 – 4:30 at Clay College, Middleport Pottery
In this workshop, Hamish will demonstrate teapot construction techniques on and off the wheel. He will show how to make both small Chinese-style gong fu teapots as well as larger English-style teapots.
You will be pushed to try and make both of these styles of teapots. It is a great challenge to try and go delicate and small, especially when it comes to spouts.
There will be time for play too! You will have room to experiment and play with different kinds of lids, spouts, knobs and handles. To end the class, we will use the leftover parts to make some eccentric collaborative teapots.
Plenty of tea will be supplied – Hamish will bring an array of different teas to share. If any participants enjoy baking, then bringing cake along to the class is highly encouraged!
You are also encouraged to bring a pot which is meaningful to you for discussion with the group. On the first day, toward the end of the class, we will gather to discuss our pots. These could be made by you, or not … just a pot that you have lived with for a while, that has some meaning to you and that you’d like to bring to share with us.
About HAMISH JACKSON
Halfway through his undergraduate literature degree, Hamish realised he wanted to become a potter. He started out at Winchcombe Pottery in England, then completed a four-year apprenticeship with Mark Hewitt in North Carolina, followed by an MFA at Utah State University.
He now works as a studio potter and has exhibited and taught in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and New Zealand. Hamish focuses on using local materials in his work. He seeks to make pots that people love to use and connect them to the landscapes where his materials come from. Hamish is currently working at the Leach Pottery in St. Ives, England.
