Small Decorative Vessel by Katharina Treml
H7cm x D6cm
About Katharina:
Katharina grew up in rural Austria. Being in nature, making, creating and learning new skills has always been an integral part of her life. While studying biotechnology in Vienna she was introduced to clay and decided to exchange her lab coat for a potter’s apron and make ceramics her career. In 2018, she moved to Ireland to train at the renowned DCCI Ceramics Skills and Design Course in Kilkenny, where she graduated in 2020.
Katharina now works from her home studio along the Copper Coast in Co. Waterford where she makes wheel-thrown tableware and one-off decorative vessels.
Working predominantly in porcelain, Katharina explores thrown vessels as silent guardians of the places we inhabit. They can hold memories of a really good meal, a certain moment, story or person. She likes the tension between looseness and definition, the interplay of considered craftsmanship and unpredictability of movement in the kiln.
Inspiration is often drawn from the rugged Irish coastline. Its colours and weathered textures are softened and loosely translated into tactile surfaces and gradients of colour, often through the use of traditional ash glazes with local rock additions. Silky microcrystalline glazes are layered in different ways and sometimes fired multiple times to create movement, subtle patterns and depth of surface.
“I am interested in making pots that enrich everyday life and encourage people to slow down in a fast-paced world. The way these pieces make you feel when you’re around them is important to me.”
