Masterclass: Ken Matsuzaki

Clay College is honoured to host a masterclass by one of the most exceptional and renowned Japanese potters working today. Ken apprenticed under Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka, who was trained by founding member of the Mingei movement, Shoji Hamada. He established his own kiln in Mashiko in the late 70s. Today, his work is exhibited worldwide and held in national collections from the V&A to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This practical masterclass is a rare opportunity to learn from and work alongside one of the leading international figures of ceramic art.

Masterclass - Porcelain - Richard Heeley

This is a two-day masterclass aimed at people who already have intermediate throwing skills and wish to expand their knowledge. You will learn about the processes Richard Heeley uses to throw and decorate his work using porcelain, slips and oxides. Richard is a skilled potter and a selected member of the CraftPotters’ Association. He has over 20 years’ experience of teaching pottery. This is a real opportunity to understand his approach and creative process and to apply them to your own work. This course is suitable for those who have experience of throwing, are able to centre clay and are confident in throwing a 10cm cylinder. There will be mixture of demonstrations and opportunities to throw yourself with the help of the tutor.

Evening Classes


Evening Class Monday - Throwing

Running in 6 weeks block 6:00PM – 9:00PM Clay College Stoke runs weekly mixed ability evening classes that are aimed at people who wish to learn the techniques of studio pottery in a professional working studio environment. The classes are suitable for beginners and those with experience of clay. The classes will be taught by skilled potter and member of the Craftsmen Potters Association Richard Heeley. Situated in historic Middleport pottery, we offer a creative environment, excellent facilities including a potter’s wheel for each student that attends. We aim to teach you a variety of techniques to help you produce well-made pots. Towards the end of the course you will be asked to select up to 6 medium sized pots for glazing and firing. Evening classes run during college term times in 6 week blocks, on Monday and Wednesday evenings. There are a maximum of 14 places available for each set of classes. Materials and tools are provided *Cost includes the firing and glazing of upto 6 medium sized pots of your choice

Beginners Throwing Weekend

Clay College Stoke is pleased to be able to offer this weekend, pottery, beginners’ class. This is aimed at people with very limited or no experience of throwing who wish to develop the core skills needed to centre and throw basic forms. You will also have an opportunity to try handelling mug shapes in a professional working studio environment. There will be a range of demonstrations and then prolonged sessions for throwing facilitated by the tutor. You will be working in stoneware clay. At the end of the 2 days you will select pieces for firing. The class will be led by skilled potter and a selected member of the Crafts Potters Association, Richard Heeley, with over 20 years experience of teaching pottery. Situated in historic Middleport pottery, the college offers a creative environment and excellent facilities including a potter’s wheel for each student. We aim to teach you a variety of techniques to help you produce well-made pots.

Improvers Throwing Weekend

Clay College Stoke is pleased to be able to offer a weekend, pottery improvers’ course. The weekend is suitable for those who have experience of throwing and are able to centre clay and are confident in throwing a 10cm cylinder, but who want to develop greater consistency in their throwing and learn to throw bigger and taller pots. There will be a range of demonstrations as well as plenty of opportunities to practice throwing and develop your technique, with the help of the tutor. The class will be led by Richard Heeley; a skilled potter and a selected member of the Craft Potters’ Association. He has over 20 years’ experience of teaching pottery. Situated in historic Middleport Pottery, the College offers a creative environment and excellent facilities including a potter’s wheel for each student.
