This course will be taught by Clay College Course Director; Kevin Millward, Clay College Principal; Ben Brierley, with a 1 day workshop with Guest Tutor; Jon Williams.

Experience level intermediate. Must be able to centre and competently throw cylinders and bowls.

This 5 day course will cover:

  • Designing and planning forms.
  • Weighing out clay.
  • Measuring.
  • Preparing clay.
  • Throwing component parts.
  • Altering and marking thrown parts.
  • How to join effectively.
  • Avoiding joining cracks.
  • Assembling large pots.
  • Throwing and assembling thrown sculptural pieces.
  • Applying slips.
  • Finishing joins.

This course will run 10am-4pm, Monday 17th- Friday 21st Jan.

Situated in the historic Middleport Pottery, the College offers a creative environment and excellent facilities including a potter’s wheel for each student. We are not able to fire any of the pieces from this throwing taster session but if you would like to take what you have thrown, please bring a box for safe transporting.

Please note: There will be plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit for you to help yourself to throughout the day but lunch is not provided on this course.
