Gas Reduction Firing

April brought with it better weather and the opportunity to fire reduction fire pieces made for stoneware briefs. In many cases this was the first opportunity students had had to reduction fire and work with a gas kiln.

Onsite there is a large brick gas kiln that students use for firing. Using this kiln helps them to develop vital understanding of health and safety relating to to reduction firing. When firing students are responsible for all aspects of the process with the guidance and support of Course Director, Kevin Millward. It is vital to the course that students have hands on opportunities to develop confidence in all aspects of firing their work. This ensures we are training fully self reliant potters fully capable of producing and firing their work.
