Description
Carved Chamotte stoneware Large Textured Ikebana Form by David Binns
About David
David’s home and studio are in a small rural village in North Wales.
His career in ceramics (going back to the 1980’s) has included making, teaching and research.
His current practice involves making glazed vessel forms, carved from solid blocks of porcelain or stoneware clay. Using woodworking chisels and blades, David carves solid lumps of clay into angular vessels with torn, textured detail, reminiscent of hewn rock formations. He has developed making processes that involve both control and chance, leading to outcomes that are never fully predicted, meaning each piece of work is unique and unrepeatable. All his work is glazed with a variety of copper and iron-bearing glazes, fired to Cone 10 in an oxidising atmosphere.
Whilst drawing inspiration from the natural landscape, David’s thinking is shaped by a deep respect for the fundamental principles of Japanese aesthetics. His intention is to make work that is hopefully bold and visually engaging, whilst simultaneously conveying a sense of simplicity and quietness.
David has become increasingly interested in the relationship between his ceramic work and plant material. He is particularly interested in making work that can be used in conjunction with Ikebana, the traditional art of Japanese flower arranging.
David has participated in numerous exhibitions in both the UK and internationally.
He is a Fellow of the UK Craft Potters Association and a member of the UNESCO International Academy of Ceramics.
He was awarded an Emeritus Professorship on retiring from his university post in 2020.
