The Great North Staffordshire Clay Map!!

Clay College is asking the people of North Staffordshire to dig some clay from where they live to contribute to the Great North Staffordshire Clay Map! We will process and fire the clay so we can see the many colours of the clay we walk on all the time, and display the map for Earth Day at Middleport Pottery on April 26th.

How to take part

Collect a bag from the Clay College gallery (or use a freezer bag you have at home)

Dig some clay from your local area

Drop off the sample to Clay College, Middleport Pottery and let us know where you collected it by April 13th

The sample should be the size of a golf ball or smaller

When digging clay, use common sense and do not collect near unstable or dangerous locations. Always have the land owner’s permission before digging.

How to identify Clay

Often, digging in your own garden will uncover some clay. Rivers, ponds, exposed banks, construction excavations all make for good places to look. Construction workers will normally donate you the clay if you ask nicely (though they may find you a bit odd).

Roll the sample into a small sausage and try to make a loop out of it. If it can do this without too much cracking, you have found clay.
