During this course, with the guidance of Kevin Millward and Ben Brierley, you will learn to build, pack and fire a dry-laid, self-supporting kiln.
This course will cover:
- Information on different types and grades of brick- advantages, and disadvantages.
- Fuel and kiln design options.
- Methods of construction.
- Calculating, Cutting, and constructing arches.
- Building a dry-laid self-supporting kiln.
- Packing and firing.
Schedule
Wednesday: Building a small (approx 4cu/ft) mixed fuel kiln.
Thursday: Packing the kiln.
Friday: Fire the kiln.
Monday morning: Unpack and discuss results.
The kiln built during this course will be fired on Friday. We ask that you bring a selection (around 10) of your own bisque-fired pots to be glazed at Clay College. Glazes will be provided by the college.
Please note: There will be plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit for you to help yourself to throughout the day but lunch is
not provided on this course.
