Over the course, with the guidance of Kevin Millward and Ben Brierley, you will learn to build, pack and fire a dry-laid, self-supporting kiln.

This course will cover:
  • Information on different types and grades of brick- advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Fuel and kiln design options.
  • Methods of construction. 
  • Calculating, Cutting, and constructing arches. 
  • Building a dry laid self supporting kiln. 
  • Packing and firing. 
Schedule Wednesday: Building a small (approx 4cu/ft) mixed fuel kiln. Thursday: Packing the kiln. Friday: Fire the kiln. Monday morning: Unpack and discuss results. The kiln built during this course will be fired on Friday. We ask that you bring a selection (around 10) of your own bisque-fired pots to be glazed at Clay College. Glazes will be provided by the college.   Please note: There will be plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit for you to help yourself to throughout the day but lunch is not provided on this course. Please note there is a maximum of 5 places on this course.
