During this course, with the guidance of Kevin Millward and Brian Dickenson, you will learn to build, pack and fire a dry-laid, self-supporting kiln. Unlike previous kiln-building masterclasses, this course will feature two firings with two different kilns.

This course will cover:

  • Information on different types and grades of brick- advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Fuel and kiln design options.
  • Methods of construction.
  • Calculating, Cutting, and constructing arches.
  • Building a dry-laid self-supporting kiln.
  • Packing and firing.

The schedule will include the whole firing process: from building a small (approx 4cu/ft) mixed fuel kiln to packing and firing and unpacking and discussing results. We ask that you bring a selection (around 15) of your own bisque-fired pots to be glazed at Clay College. Glazes will be provided by the college.

Please note: There will be plenty of tea, coffee, biscuits, and fruit for you to help yourself to throughout the day but lunch is not provided on this course. There is a maximum of 12 places on this course, which will be split into groups of six and taught by one of the tutors.
